Which 8HP transmission controller should I choose?
We believe the Turbolamik and MaxxECU are the best options currently available. At the time of writing, the Turbolamik offers the most comprehensive features, including launch mode and virtual clutch control. However, MaxxECU has recently announced support for the virtual clutch, and we will test this feature soon and share our findings!
Can I still keep my clutch pedal with an 8HP Automatic tranmission?
The 8HP transmission is an automatic transmission that uses a torque converter. What makes this transmission remarkable is that, with the right transmission controller, you can simulate a clutch system and use it just like in a manual car.
While there’s no actual pressure plate or clutch involved, the clutch master cylinder can be removed, as it won’t be used in this setup.
How It Works
- Clutch Position Sensor:
A clutch position sensor is installed to track the position of the pedal. This enables the transmission controller to interpret your clutch inputs accurately. - Clutch Simulator:
To provide a realistic clutch pedal feel, a clutch simulator is installed. Alternatively, a drive-by-wire (DBW) pedal or any other device capable of returning a proportional 0–5V signal can be used. - Transmission Controller:
The signal from the clutch pedal is sent to the transmission controller, which then modulates the internal clutch packs of the transmission. This allows the transmission to disengage (go into neutral) when the clutch pedal is pressed and reapply clutch pressure when the pedal is released.
How It Feels and Functions
- Engaging from Standstill:
- If the clutch is pressed, the transmission goes into neutral. As you release the clutch, the car starts moving forward.
- If you don’t use the clutch pedal, the car behaves like a traditional automatic—it won’t stall, and pressing the accelerator will make it move.
- Virtual Clutch Features:
- Revving: Use the clutch to rev the engine freely.
- Burnouts and Antilag: Engage the clutch to initiate burnouts or use antilag systems.
- Launch Control: Launch the car effectively at the drag strip.
- Drifting (Clutch Kicking): Perform clutch kicks to unsettle the rear and maintain drifts.
Drifting with an 8HP?
Yes, it is possible to drift with an 8HP transmission! The Turbolamik controller includes a dedicated drift mode designed specifically for this purpose, providing features that cater to the demands of drifting.
Features of Drift Mode
- Manual Gear Control:
- In drift mode, the transmission will never upshift or downshift automatically, giving you complete control over gear selection.
- It also includes a safeguard to prevent double downshifts, which could lead to over-revving and engine damage.
- Virtual Clutch:
- With a virtual clutch system, you can clutch kick just like in a manual car.
- This allows you to initiate or maintain drifts by disrupting rear traction with precise control.
- Handbrake Integration:
- The handbrake is wired to the transmission and automatically shifts it into neutral when the handbrake is applied.
- This protects the transmission and makes it easier to maintain control during transitions or when locking the rear wheels.
